Programs Overview Transcript
The Business Technology department at LBCC is designed to help students who are interested in a career in an office environment. These classes provide valuable training and experience, giving job-seeking students a competitive advantage over rival applicants when pursuing a position in this field.
Business Technology offers several programs of study. The Medical Assistant program is covered in a separate orientation. Whether you want to gain immediate job skills or commit to earning your associate’s degree, there’s an option here for you.
Program courses may be held in Albany, Lebanon, or Corvallis, OR. The three associate degree programs include cooperative work experience as part of their curriculum. Students will work for at least 180 hours in a related setting, honing their skills and gaining valuable experience and connections. Sites will be based in the Oregon area, and students are responsible for any travel arrangements or costs.
The Administrative Medical Assistant program is designed for students who wish to work as an administrative assistant in the medical field. Classes cover a combination of medical terminology and office skills to ensure that students have the essential background knowledge to perform well. Students interested in this program should have good people skills, work well in a stressful environment, and be detail-oriented.
The Legal Administrative Assistant program is similar, but specializes in the legal or governmental field. As with the Administrative Medical Assistant program, courses cover a combination of office skills and field-specific knowledge to give students the necessary background to excel. Graduates will be well prepared to find work outside of the legal setting as well.
LBCC’s Administrative Office Professional program has been recently revamped to fit a changing work environment. The newly updated program places an emphasis on self-direction, management, and interaction skills. Students will train in modern labs with up-to-date technology and equipment.
The one-year Medical Office Specialist program is designed for students seeking an entry-level position as a medical clerk, receptionist, or coder. Students have the option to specialize in transcription or coding work. These certificate courses lay the groundwork for students who wish to pursue a two-year degree in the Medical Assistant or Administrative Medical Assistant program. Medical coding is an integral part of the curriculum of these programs. Once students complete the coding portion of their curriculum, they are eligible to sit for the national coding exam offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Once certified, graduates are eligible to work in coding positions for hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and independent practices.
The yearlong Medical Transcriptionist program emphasizes medical terminology and word processing skills. Students will learn to use transcription setups and software to quickly and accurately transcribe medical documents from recorded dictation.
LB offers two programs for those wishing to pursue a career as an office specialist. A short-term certificate in Office Technology Skills, or a one-year Office Specialist certificate. Students wishing to update their skills or gain entry-level employment may choose to earn the short-term certificate, which can later be applied toward the one-year Office Specialist certificate. The one-year certificate provides more technology skills and enables students to work at a higher level.
For all of these programs, you need to be able to demonstrate proof of sufficient skill in writing and math, either by taking the required prerequisites or by earning a high enough score on LBCC’s placement tests. Students should take the placement tests as soon as possible, and discuss their results with a program adviser if necessary. For more details, see the individual program guidelines. You must also have basic computer and Internet proficiency, and be able to type at least 25 words per minute.
Healthcare providers and facilities require criminal background checks for all of their employees, so if you have been charged with or convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, you might not be able to work in a medical setting following graduation. If you have questions, you should contact LBCC Admissions or the program’s adviser to check your eligibility.
These programs are eligible for financial aid. To determine if you are eligible, you must fill out a FAFSA form and list LBCC as a receiving school. Financial aid is limited by some restrictions, so you may need to contact the Financial Aid office to discuss your options.
