Faculty Transcript

Janet Lodge: So I’m Janet Lodge; I’m faculty and department chair for the Business Technology department.

Linda Carroll: My name is Linda Carroll, and I’m faculty in the Business Technology department.

Twila Lehman: My name is Twila Lehman.

Nancy Noe: My name is Nancy Noe.

Rick Durling: My name is Rick Durling.

Kathy Durling: My name’s Kathy Durling, and I’m the program director for the Medical Assistant program.

Jerry Coe: Good morning, my name is Jerry Coe, and I teach for the Business Tech department, and I work with Rick and Kathy Durling in the Medical Assistant program.

RD:
I mainly work in the Medical Assistant program, and the Administrative Medical Assistant program, and the Medical Office Specialist program.

KD: I teach in all the medical programs.

NN: I’m the adviser for the Administrative Office Professional and the Legal Administrative Assistant program. I’m also one of the advisers for the Office Specialist.

TL: I’m the adviser for the Medical Transcriptionist, one-year Office Specialist, the short-term Office . . . the short-term Office Technology Skills certificate, the Medical Office Specialist one-year certificate.

LC: I teach mostly software applications classes. I also teach desktop publishing classes and job success skills.

JL: I teach a variety of classes in our department, both the office side and the medical side. Most any of the programs of the eight degrees or certificates that we have, you might see me in those.

TL: All of these programs really take you from one level of learning and they really give you a lot of lifelong skills that will help you in any type of job or in life.

NN: Students who enter our programs come out with the skills they need to enter the workforce. And we pride ourselves on keeping current with the latest technology.

TL: There are a lot of basic skills that include learning how to keyboard and format documents, learning how to work in teams, how to community effectively, how to use software programs.

LC: So if you’re a very detail- and task-oriented person, you’ll love working in these fields. And the skills that you will learn will more than adequately prepare you to be successful in whatever you choose to do.

NN: We have students that work in the city manager’s office, the courthouse, many of the attorneys’ offices, real estate offices, appraisal offices–it’s a wide variety. So you’re not limited. These are skills that you can use in almost any environment.

TL: I’d say come back and get an education. It opens up so many doors for you that you might not otherwise have. Even if you feel like it’s outside of the area that you want to go into.

JL: Working full-time and raising a family, I did that: I went to school evenings and weekends. So when students tell me about all of their struggles, and they have homework and they don’t have time, I can really look at them and say, “I’ve been there and I’ve done that, and I can sympathize, but you can do it too,” and I know that you can.

RD: My classes are all taught both in lecture format and on Moodle. I want to make sure students have the most access possible for their normal life, if things come up, they have a difficult time with transportation, with daycare, and things like that. And I think making that class and the resources of the class available to as many students as possible is really important.

LC: Seeing people gain confidence through the skills that they learn in our programs is very rewarding.

RD: I think the idea of somebody coming here looking for new skills and new knowledge and being able to leave with a new career is pretty exciting.

TL: Learning at a community college is just a great way to better your opportunities for the future.
