Programs Overview Transcript
The Business Management department at LBCC is designed to help students who are interested in a career in business. These classes will provide new instruction for students just entering the workforce or continued learning opportunities for those wishing to progress in their field.
Business Management offers six programs of study. Whether you want to gain immediate job skills, earn your associate’s degree, or transfer to a four-year university, there’s an opportunity here for you.
The Accounting Clerk program, where you will earn a one-year certificate, lasts just three terms. This certificate can help you earn an entry- to mid-level position as an accounting clerk, bookkeeper, junior accountant, or internal auditor. Students should be interested in working in a business environment and enjoy operating as part of a team.
Accounting Technology is an extension to the Accounting Clerk program. In Accounting Technology, you can earn an associate of applied science. The first year covers the same material as the Accounting Clerk certificate. In the second year, you can choose an emphasis in either the business or the healthcare field. If you choose the business track, your classes will focus on governmental and tax policy. If you choose healthcare, you will learn basic medical terminology and insurance procedures. Both of these options are designed to prepare you to work as a bookkeeper, junior accountant, internal auditor, or management trainee. Students completing their AAS in Accounting Technology, rather than their Accounting Clerk certificate, can expect to enter the workforce at a higher level and advance further.
Retail Management is a less-than-one-year certificate designed to prepare students for success in business operation, sales, and management. To accommodate working students, many classes are held in the evenings or online.
The Business Administration, Economics and Merchandising Management degrees are designed for students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university, though those interested in joining the workforce immediately after graduation will also have improved options. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should be sure to discuss their class selection and transfer plans with their adviser.
The Business Administration degree is designed for students interested in the world of business. There are two courses of study, depending on which university students plan to transfer to. If you wish to continue your studies in Oregon State University’s College of Business, you should earn your AS. If you plan to study at a different Oregon institution, you will need your AAOT. Students wishing to transfer to a university outside of Oregon should discuss their class schedules with their adviser.
The Economics degree is ideal for students with a strong interest in a career as an economist or in public policy. Further, an economics degree is recommended for many graduate programs, including law school. As with the Business Administration degree, there are two options for transfers. Earning your AS will allow you to transfer to OSU and earning your AAOT will prepare you to continue your studies at another Oregon institution.
Students interested in working as a merchandise manager, buyer, or agent should consider the Merchandising Management degree. This AS prepares students to transfer to OSU and earn their bachelor’s degree in Merchandising Management. This degree gives students advanced courses to prepare them for management positions in the retailing and merchandising of a wide variety of products.
All of these programs require that students have sufficient math and writing skills to enroll in the appropriate prerequisite courses as part of their course of study.
These programs are eligible for financial aid. To determine if you are eligible, you must fill out a FAFSA form and list LBCC as a receiving school. Financial aid is limited by some restrictions, so you may need to contact the Financial Aid office to discuss your options.
